The layout

What the Tile Grid layout looks like

The header carries the company block on the left and an “Earnings Summary” title with the stub number on the right. Employee details follow in two columns, with dotted leaders running from each label to its value: name, address, SSN, filing status, employee ID, pay period, pay date, pay frequency and how the pay was made.

The middle of the page is four column blocks under tinted headings: Earnings (hours and rate shown under each line), Earnings YTD, Deductions and Deductions YTD. Four tiles below total the taxable gross, YTD gross, deductions and YTD deductions. Two filled bars show YTD net pay and this period’s net pay, and net pay is also written out in words.

Best for

Who this template suits

Anyone who reads a stub for the totals first: freelancers checking income for the year so far, households tracking take-home pay, or workers comparing this period with the year to date. Writing net pay out in words also makes the amount hard to misread on a printout.

Overview

About this tile grid pay stub template

The Tile Grid Pay Stub Template is a modern cards layout: rounded cards or tiles, with net pay as a card or bar. Four columns of tiles, four total tiles, net pay bars, and net pay written in words.

From top to bottom it runs company header with stub number, employee details with dotted leaders, earnings and Earnings YTD columns and deductions and Deductions YTD columns, and then the rest of the stub. You fill it in once in the builder, the taxes and totals are worked out for you, and the finished pay stub downloads as a PDF.

Section by section

What each part of the Tile Grid shows

1. Company header with stub number

It opens the Tile Grid. The Tile Grid names the business here: company name, address, and the EIN and phone if you give them. A logo, when you upload one, sits in this block.

2. Employee details with dotted leaders

The second block on the Tile Grid. The person paid: name, address, employee ID and the masked SSN (only the last four digits print). Check the spelling here against an ID before you download.

3. Earnings and Earnings YTD columns

The third block on the Tile Grid. Earnings lines: hours × rate for hourly pay, one line for a salary, and separate lines for overtime, bonuses or tips. On the Tile Grid, the total of these lines is the gross pay.

4. Deductions and Deductions YTD columns

The fourth block on the Tile Grid. What came out of gross pay: federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, state and local tax where they apply, then your own deductions such as a health plan or retirement. The builder estimates the taxes; every line stays editable.

5. Four total tiles

The fifth block on the Tile Grid. Where the lines are added up. Gross pay should equal the earnings lines, total deductions the tax and deduction lines; the gap between them is net pay.

6. Net pay and YTD net pay bars

The sixth block on the Tile Grid. Net pay, the amount actually paid: gross pay minus every tax and deduction above, plus any non-taxable reimbursement. It should match the deposit to the cent.

7. Net pay in words, and a memo note when you add one

It closes the Tile Grid. Net pay written out in words, the way a check spells the amount, so the figure cannot be misread.

Colours

Tile Grid colours

The Tile Grid comes in Cornflower, Periwinkle, Harbor blue, Spruce and Black & white, with Cornflower as its standard colour. The colour you choose recolours the accents (card headers, tinted totals and the net pay bar); the figures and layout stay the same, and every colour is included in the price.

Document type

What makes the Tile Grid a pay stub layout

The Tile Grid is laid out as a pay stub: the short, practical record that comes with a paycheck or direct deposit. Payroll systems also call the same record an earnings statement or pay slip; the contents do not change with the name: who was paid, for which period, gross pay, each tax and deduction, net pay and the year to date.

Best use

When to choose the Tile Grid

Reading on a phone

The Tile Grid breaks the stub into cards with totals that stand out, which reads well on a small screen and in a PDF viewer.

Employees on payroll

The Tile Grid prints the full set of withholding lines (federal, Social Security, Medicare, state) for a W-2 employee’s stub.

Several pay periods in a row

The Tile Grid prints year-to-date figures in “Earnings and Earnings YTD columns”, so a run of consecutive stubs shows the year building up period by period.

A safe first choice

The Tile Grid is one of our top picks to start with, chosen for how clearly it reads.

Compare

How the Tile Grid compares

The Tile Grid belongs to the Modern cards family, with Classic Blue, Detailed Blue, Banner Card and Tabbed Card. They share the same overall order; what sets the Tile Grid apart is four columns of tiles, four total tiles, net pay bars, and net pay written in words.

Compare them: Classic Blue · Detailed Blue · Banner Card · Tabbed Card

Print and PDF

Printing and reading the Tile Grid

Rounded cards and tinted totals carry the colour you pick, so it looks best printed in colour or opened as a PDF on a screen; in black and white the cards still keep their borders. The PDF is made from the same layout you see in the preview, so what you check is what you get.

Need several periods? The multi-stub builder makes consecutive stubs in this layout with year-to-date totals carried forward, and the sample pay stub walks through every line with real figures.

Before you download

Checks on a finished Tile Grid

  1. In “Earnings and Earnings YTD columns”, rate × hours equals each line, and the lines add up to gross pay.
  2. In “Deductions and Deductions YTD columns”, every tax and deduction you expect is listed once, with its correct name.
  3. In “Net pay and YTD net pay bars”, net pay equals gross pay minus total deductions (plus any reimbursement) and matches the deposit.
  4. In “Earnings and Earnings YTD columns”, year-to-date totals include this period and step up correctly from the previous stub.
  5. Names, addresses and the pay date are spelled and dated as on your records.

FAQ

Tile Grid Pay Stub Template questions

Is the Tile Grid a pay stub or an earnings statement?

It is titled as a pay stub, and it holds the same record either way: who was paid, for which period, gross pay, taxes and deductions, net pay and the year to date.

What colours does the Tile Grid come in?

Cornflower, Periwinkle, Harbor blue, Spruce and Black & white. The colour changes the accents only, and every colour is included.

Does the Tile Grid show year-to-date totals?

No. The Tile Grid is filled in online and delivered as a finished PDF, with the taxes and totals worked out. You can preview it free before you pay.

Can I preview the Tile Grid Pay Stub Template before creating a paystub?

Yes. This page shows a sample of the template, and the builder shows your own figures in it live before anything is paid for.

Can I switch from the Tile Grid to another template later?

Yes. Your details stay in the builder when you change templates, so you can compare layouts with your own figures before you download.
