Why the state matters
Across the 35 states where we publish a full computation, a $60,000 salary leaves between $50,390 and $45,974 after federal tax, FICA and state deductions — a spread of roughly $4,400 a year for identical work. Tennessee and Nevada sit at the top; Oregon at the bottom. Figures are 2026 estimates on a single filer with no dependents.
Six states we publish have no income tax at all: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, Tennessee, Texas and Washington. But Washington still takes Paid Leave and WA Cares from every cheque, and Alaska deducts employee unemployment insurance — one of only three states that does. A stub from a “no-tax” state is rarely gross minus federal alone.
Federal law requires your employer to keep payroll records, not to hand you a statement. California requires nine specific items on every one; New York, Colorado, Washington and Minnesota run their own lists. Alabama, Georgia, South Dakota and Tennessee require nothing at all.
The federal rule is weekly, over 40 hours. California, Alaska, Nevada and Colorado add a daily trigger, and each works differently — Nevada’s applies only below a wage threshold, and Colorado pays on whichever of three calculations comes out highest.
Ohio has hundreds of municipal income taxes, Pennsylvania has local earned income tax, and Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri and Maryland all have county or city lines that never appear in a state-level comparison. Your state page names the ones that apply.
Each state page shows its own take-home table, the deductions that apply there, and what the law requires on a pay stub — with the primary source for every figure. Estimates only; your withholding depends on your W-4, credits and pre-tax benefits.
