The layout

What the Center Bands layout looks like

A bordered company box sits at the top left, with your logo, the “Earnings statement” title and the stub number on the right. The first color band, Employee details, runs across the page over a framed block of label and value cells in two columns: the employee’s name, address, masked SSN and ID on one side, and the pay period, pay date, frequency, filing status and how the pay was made on the other.

A second band, Earnings, sits over the pay table (type, rate, hours, this period and year to date) beside the taxes and deductions table, each closed by its total in a stronger cell. A third band, Net pay, ends the statement with net pay for this period and the year to date, any non-taxable pay just above it, and any memo in a boxed note.

Overview

About this center bands earnings statement template

The Center Bands Earnings Statement Template is a side-by-side ledgers layout: two ledgers or panels next to each other, or a main column with a sidebar. Full-width color bands with centered titles over boxed label and value cells, with the pay table and deductions side by side.

From top to bottom it runs company box, title and stub number, employee details band: the employee and the pay facts in boxed cells, earnings band: pay table beside taxes and deductions and gross taxable pay and total withheld, and then the rest of the stub. You fill it in once in the builder, the taxes and totals are worked out for you, and the finished earnings statement downloads as a PDF.

Section by section

What each part of the Center Bands shows

1. Company box, title and stub number

It opens the Center Bands. This is where the payer is named. On the Center Bands it carries the company name and address, and the EIN and phone when you enter them; add a logo and it prints here too.

2. Employee details band: the employee and the pay facts in boxed cells

The second block on the Center Bands. Who was paid. The Center Bands prints the name and address, an employee ID if you use one, and the SSN masked to its last four digits.

3. Earnings band: pay table beside taxes and deductions

The third block on the Center Bands. Earnings and deductions read across from each other. Each pay line (hours × rate, salary, overtime, bonus) sits on one side and each tax or deduction on the other, so on the Center Bands you can see what was earned and what came out in one row.

4. Gross taxable pay and total withheld

The fourth block on the Center Bands. Where the lines are added up. Gross pay should equal the earnings lines, total deductions the tax and deduction lines; the gap between them is net pay.

5. Net pay band with this period and YTD

The fifth block on the Center Bands. Net pay, the amount actually paid: gross pay minus every tax and deduction above, plus any non-taxable reimbursement. It should match the deposit to the cent.

6. Time off and a memo note, when you add them

It closes the Center Bands. Optional lines. A memo prints as a short note (a bonus reason, a check number), and time-off balances print when you enter them; the Center Bands leaves the space out when they are empty.

Colours

Center Bands colours

The Center Bands comes in Cyan, Azure, Sky, Cobalt, Lagoon, Emerald, Berry and Black & white, with Cyan as its standard colour. The colour you choose recolours the accents (the bands, ledger rules and total bars); the figures and layout stay the same, and every colour is included in the price.

Document type

Why the Center Bands is called an earnings statement

“Earnings statement” is the title many payroll departments print on the same document others call a pay stub or pay slip. The Center Bands is drawn as a statement (a titled page with the period and the figures laid out formally), but it holds exactly what a pay stub holds: who was paid, for which period, gross pay, each tax and deduction, net pay and the year to date.

Best use

When to choose the Center Bands

Comparing two columns at once

The Center Bands puts two panels next to each other, so current and year-to-date or earnings and deductions can be compared without scrolling.

Employees on payroll

The Center Bands prints the full set of withholding lines (federal, Social Security, Medicare, state) for a W-2 employee’s stub.

A formal statement

The Center Bands’s statement title and layout suit a stub that is filed with other paperwork or handed to someone else.

Several pay periods in a row

The Center Bands prints year-to-date figures in “Net pay band with this period and YTD”, so a run of consecutive stubs shows the year building up period by period.

Compare

How the Center Bands compares

The Center Bands belongs to the Side-by-side ledgers family, with Split Ledger, Accent Panel and Side Rail. They share the same overall order; what sets the Center Bands apart is full-width color bands with centered titles over boxed label and value cells, with the pay table and deductions side by side.

Print and PDF

Printing and reading the Center Bands

With two columns sharing each row, the page is short; on a phone the PDF is best read in landscape or zoomed to one column at a time. The PDF is made from the same layout you see in the preview, so what you check is what you get.

Need several periods? The multi-stub builder makes consecutive stubs in this layout with year-to-date totals carried forward, and the sample pay stub walks through every line with real figures.

Checks on a finished Center Bands

  1. In “Earnings band: pay table beside taxes and deductions”, rate × hours equals each line, and the lines add up to gross pay.
  2. In “Earnings band: pay table beside taxes and deductions”, every tax and deduction you expect is listed once, with its correct name.
  3. In “Net pay band with this period and YTD”, net pay equals gross pay minus total deductions (plus any reimbursement) and matches the deposit.
  4. In “Net pay band with this period and YTD”, year-to-date totals include this period and step up correctly from the previous stub.
  5. Names, addresses and the pay date are spelled and dated as on your records.
